Tantra like Yoga or Zen, is a path to enlightenment, which has its roots in India. It is also named the “science of ecstasy.”
Tantra has a unique approach to life in general. It is a system of self- development which accepts life totally, exalting experience without reservation, living life to the fullest. Everything is to be experienced playfully, yet with awareness and a sense of sacredness in every gesture, every sensory perception, and every action.
Tantra seeks to spiritualize or transform life´s activities into acts of awareness and devotion to the primal power or Shakti, the higher force (sexual energy), the greatest source of energy in the universe, which in Tantra is conceived of as a feminine power. According to Tantra one can never go beyond the sexual plane of existence by denying it, but only by accepting it fully, utilizing and spiritualizing one´s natural sexual activities in the path to greater awareness. In this way one will evolve to a state of true understanding of all life, including sex.
And this is the main point: be able to acknowledge this energy, accept it, learn how to use it, and channel it properly, using it in a safe way, in a creative way, in a positive way.
The science of Tantra has two main branches, which are known as vama marga and dakshina marga. Vama marga is the left path which combines sexual life with yoga practices in order to explode the dormant energy centers. Dakshina marga is the right path, of yoga practices without sexual enactment. Nowadays the left path is the mostly followed, the one that uses sexual life for spiritual development.
The approach of Tantra is that sex can be used as a means of developing spiritual awareness and opening up the higher chakras or planes of consciousness.
Sex is never denigrated or practiced in an unaware or animalistic manner, but it is elevated to its rightful place, the plane on which two people can lose their personal identity in one another, merging into union with the universal consciousness which is the goal of all true meditation.
The path of sexual Tantra has been interpreted as advocating sexual indulgence and permissiveness. But this is not the case. In fact according to the tantra shastras (scriptures) sexual union is a spiritual practice suitable only for a special class of spiritual aspirants: the heroic one.
Only these aspirants have the dedication and self-control necessary to elevate sexual union beyond its normal plane of passion and sense gratification, to the realm of a truly spiritual practice dedicated not to pleasure but to the mutual experience of higher states of awareness. The aspirant has to go through an extensive program of physical, sexual and mental exercises to heighten its sensory awareness. It is only by first knowing and then mastering the senses that they can become tools for higher awareness and meditation.
The goal of Tantra is to use your sexual energy to merge ecstatically with your partner and through him or her to become one with the cosmos or God.
In our society nowadays an increased interest for Tantra is happening, people are beginning to see through and willing to learn how to use their sexual energy in a profoundly spiritual and mystical way with the goal of attaining higher awareness.
Tantra teaches sacred sexuality: how to make Love as a ritual, slow…long and deep.
The art of prolonging the pleasures of lovemaking without reaching orgasm is describe in the Kama Sutra, the Hindu sex manual written in the 4th century. This art of Love making refers to both partners actively participating in learning to prolong their enjoyment before reaching orgasm.
